Your heart is to be treasured

A good friend of mine told me once, "Remember Susan, the condition of the heart is of most importance".

I shrugged off her statement at the time because it made me feel uncomfortable, but I am an advocate for that truth now.

Maybe I felt uncomfortable because feelings, heart issues and emotions are revealing. It makes you feel naked, the utmost vulnerable and therefore weak.

If our hearts, or souls really, are what we have to carry forever into eternity, wouldn't we take more care of it? Wouldn't we have the decency to take care of others too? But we are selfish.

I'm responsible for taking care of my own, as well as others. So are you. I can't make people care, or take into consideration the other hearts around them, but someday we will all be held accountable.

Some people know all too well the ability others have of hurting their heart. So they don't share it with anyone. I think that's more detrimental then someone who takes the risk and is let down.

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless--it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.” - C.S. Lewis

Good words, I like that you're really thinking about this.
